FREE AUTHOR RESOURCE
Free eBook Publishing Guide
A practical reference for turning a finished manuscript into an eBook that readers can discover and enjoy.
1. Prepare the manuscript
Work through your planned editing stages before formatting. Keep one master document and resolve tracked changes, text inconsistencies, and missing sections.
- Confirm the title, author byline and final manuscript version.
- Organize chapters using paragraph and heading styles.
- Prepare acknowledgments, dedication, front matter, back matter, author biography and links.
- Review image rights, captions, tables, quotations and permissions.
2. Choose the right digital format
Reflowable EPUB is common for text-focused books because it adapts to reader display settings. Highly illustrated books may require a different format or more detailed testing.
3. Prepare the cover and listing
- Use a high-quality front cover and check legibility as a small thumbnail.
- Write a concise description that introduces the subject and intended audience.
- Research appropriate categories and keywords without misrepresenting the book.
- Review prices, available territories and any retailer restrictions.
4. Proof the exported files
Check the table of contents, links, special characters, image placement and headings. Preview on representative reading devices or applications.
5. Publish and build awareness
Create a realistic release plan, confirm access to the author’s retailer accounts and reserve time for retailer processing. Plan book-page links, author website information and basic promotional content.
Write down what is already complete, what is outstanding and who will approve the final file before publication.
