Phase 1: manuscript and editorial decisions

Confirm the intended audience, genre, and final book promise. Finish the manuscript structure, organize a single clean version, and decide which editing levels are appropriate. Resolve major changes before production begins.||Checklist: reader statement; approved manuscript; editing scope; resolved tracked changes; permissions notes; organized images and references.

Phase 2: design and technical preparation

Create a cover brief with relevant comparison titles, approved book details, and intended formats. Prepare the eBook or print files with the correct approach for each. Phase 3: platform and rights decisions

Choose the channels that match the book and business goals. Confirm account ownership, ISBN needs, publisher or imprint information, payment setup, and applicable permissions. Write the metadata once in a master document to prevent inconsistent entries across platforms.||Checklist: controlled accounts; correct metadata; author biography; description; platform policy review; royalty and exclusivity understanding.

Phase 4: launch communications

Prepare a simple destination for interested readers. That might be a book landing page, your existing author website, an email list, or retailer pages. Create an achievable series of announcements and make sure every purchase link is correct.||Checklist: live availability checked; promotional artwork approved; newsletter or website functioning; outreach plan; defined owner for each task.

Phase 5: the first month and beyond

Keep a postlaunch folder with links, issues, corrections, and genuine reader feedback. Periodically inspect product pages and reader experience. Continue talking about the book through useful ideas rather than only repeating buy messages.||Checklist: listing audit; saved final files; review follow-up according to retailer rules; basic performance notes; plan for future editions or titles.

What to do if a step is not finished

A launch checklist should expose dependencies, not simply pressure authors to tick every box. If the manuscript is still being rewritten, do not rush final formatting. If the cover is approved but the title is changing, settle the metadata before preparing final exports. If retailer links are not yet live, schedule the launch email only after they have been verified.

Prioritize changes by impact. A broken table of contents or missing image can affect the reader experience directly. A small color preference on one promotional graphic may be less urgent. Keep a list of outstanding items with a responsible person, date, and status.

After publication, save the final approved files, sales-page URLs, and any documented listing or formatting corrections. A well-kept publishing folder makes future updates and additional editions more manageable.
